Description

A stunning teak sideboard by McINTOASH & CO Scotland.

When this piece came to us, the top was very worn, stained and marked. John has sanded back to the woods' natural beauty, cleaned, and teak oiled the whole piece.

The drawers have Thuya Burr wood. Have a read of the description below.

THUYA BURR (S)

Tetraclinis articulata, (Vahl) Mast.

syn. Callitris quadrivalvis

Family: Cupressaceae

Other names: thvine wood, citron burl (USA),

Distribution: North Africa, principally Morocco and Algeria, and introduced into Malta, Cyprus and East Africa.

General description: This coniferous tree is highly contorted and valuable only as a veneer. The burn grows underground as a root burr, formed by stooling and the repeated destruction of coppice growth which causes increased growth below ground. It is dug out rather than felled. The colour is a rich golden-brown to orange-red; the grain interlocked, contorted, hard and ll of knots, resulting in a beautiful mottled or bird's eye figure, producing very striking and lily-prized burr veneers. It is fine textured, resinous and aromatic. Requires slow kilning and care in drying. Weighs 650-700 kg/m³ (40-43 lb/ft³).

Working properties: Needs suitable preparation and flatting as it is inclined to be brittle. Gives easily and polishes extremely well.

Uses: Decorative veneering for caskets, fine cabinetmaking, small boxes, etc., panelling and marquetry.

What a statement piece.

Height 30 inches
